In the older Dooms, you needed to be able to be competent in all forms of weaponry in order to succeed in battle, due to the fact that you would only start out with your pistol.
While it would be easy to simply decry it as a COD feature (in fairness, it is), there’s a bit more meat on this bone. I’ve partaken in both the Alpha and the Beta, and while I’m impressed with a lot of elements, there are some things that definitely do need to be changed in order to more properly fit the mold of high octane, intense, and skill based arena combat that Doom is known for.įirst and foremost there’s the elephant in the blood and guts soaked arena, and that is the loadout system. While it would be easy to dismiss the criticism as simply being that of a bunch of whiny fanboys (and to be fair, it is that in some cases), more often than not, much of the criticism is grounded in good points. Hell, even the BBC has taken notice of the matter. The words like Halo and COD often used as slurs to define a less pure and degraded form of gaming. I’m in the Doomworld Facebook community and it’s been a subject of a heated and constant debate. The game as of right now only has a 37% positive review rating on Steam. You only need to look at the Steam reviews page for it to see how brutal it can get. Since then a firestorm has ignited amongst the fan base, sending the Doom community into a full-blown civil war. The Doom Beta went live not too long ago, opening the servers to even more players.
